Do this problem by hand. Turn it in at lecture.
A chemical plant produces the chemical furfural (FFL). The raw materials used to make the chemical are primarily corncobs and oat hulls: 1lbm of corncobs will make 0.5lbm of FFL and 0.5lbm of residue while 1lbm of oat hulls will make 0.75lbm of FFL and 0.25lbm of residue. The plant begins operation at 8am at which time there are 350lbm of oat hulls in the plant. During the next hour, 1000lbm of corncobs are delivered to the plant at a cost 0.1$lbm and 200lbm of oat hulls are delivered to the plant at a cost of 0.2$1bm. The plant ships out 350lbm of FFL and it is sold at a price of 0.5$1bm. During the hour, 100lbm of FFL is placed into storage in the plant. There is no mechanism to store residue so it is shipped out as soon as it is produced and sold at a rate of 0.05$lbm. At the end of the hour, the amount of oat hulls stored in the plant has decreased from 350lbm to 250lbm. No oat hulls or corncobs leave the plant.
As you do this problem, fill in the table below for a balance on each of the quantities for the one hour time interval described in the problem.
\table[[,Oat hulls (lbm),FFL (lbm),Corncobs (lbm),Money ($)],[In,,,,],[Produced,,,,],[Out,,,,],[Stored,,,,],[Destroyed,,,,]]
a.) Draw a system that includes the plant. Show on that balance all of the terms for an oat hull balance (in, produced, out, stored, and destroyed). Use your balance to fill in the first column of the table.
b.) Your balance from (a) should show that oat hulls were destroyed in the plant during the hour from 8-9 am. How much FFL and residue was produced from these destroyed oat hulls?
c.) Draw a system that includes the plant. Show on that balance all of the terms for an FFL balance (in, produced, out, stored, and destroyed). Use your balance to fill in the second column of the table.
d.) Your balance from (c) should show that FFL was produced. Some of this FFL was produced from oat hulls. The rest was produced from corn cobs. Based on this, what is the mass of corncobs destroyed in the plant?
e.) Draw a system that includes the plant. Show on that balance all of the terms for a corncob balance (in, produced, out, stored, and destroyed). Use your balance to fill in the third column of the table.
f.) Draw a system that includes the plant. Show on that balance all of the terms for a money balance (in, produced, out, stored, and destroyed). Use your balance to fill in the fourth column of the table.
