engaging in fraudulent behavior. The kids, parents, and the league suffered serious harm. The criminal also suffered through going to jail, having to sell his home, and suffering a destroyed reputation. Collegiate Sport Example: John Junker and the Fiesta Bowl Like youth sports, the overall financial status of intercollegiate athletics has grown exponentially through increased sponsorship opportunities, broadcast coverage, and general fan interest to solicit individuals to events (Williams, 2016). With this great success comes a fiduciary duty to control how the resources a college organization generates are being used. An example of this duty comes from the Arizona Sports Foundation (ASF) and former Chief Executive Officer John Junker. The ASF is a nonprofit organization that is responsible for hosting and managing over 40 events within the State of Arizona including the annual Fiesta Bowl and Cactus Bowl contests (Williams & Seifried, 2013). Thus, the Fiesta Bowl is a subsidiary of the ASF. Many researchers note one of the overall goals of a college football bowl game is to generate business for the local economy by attracting tourists to visit the host city (Seifried & King, 2012; Zimbalist, 2009). This ideal is reflected in the ASF mission statement from 2010, which states the following: 1. Staging two of the top college football bowl games in the nation, and to assist the cause of higher education with the highest university payments possible. 2. Having the people of Arizona host the most comprehensive pageant of community activities in the United States. 3. To be Arizona's leading outlet for year-round sports and pageantry-related volunteer participation. 4. To give companies and organizations unique opportunities for involvement in supporting our efforts. 5. To be financially sound, and to contribute strongly and regularly to the state's economic development and to higher education nationwide. 6. To be a source of national pride for all Arizonans (Department of the Treasury, 2010). Before the Fiesta Bowl became the large spectacle known today, it was once a midlevel postseason contest played on Christmas Day when first launched in 1971. However, the Fiesta Bowl can claim its status as one of the premiere annual college football postseason contests through John Junker's work. Junker began working at the Fiesta Bowl in 1980 after graduating from Arizona State University in 1977 and working in the school's sports information office for three years. He quickly began making a name for himself for his ability to socialize with players, coaches, and major media pundits (Walters, 2014). Specifically, his ability to network and build relationships helped the Fiesta Bowl secure the first corporate title sponsorship for a bowl game (e.g., the Sunkist Fiesta Bowl) and schedule one of the most watched college football games (e.g., No.1 Miami versus No. 2 Penn State national championship game in 1987) (Thamel, 2016). In 2000, he was named CEO and President of the Fiesta Bowl, drawing a salary of more than $600,000. He was often considered as one of the most powerful figures in college football due to his abilities to network and socialize while DX English (United States) Focus + 119%
