In the 1940's a new and powerful computing machine was developed. The field of computer science broadened to study computation in general once the discovery was made that computers could be used for more than just mathematical calculations. In the 1950's and the early 1960's, computer science began to be established as a distinct academic discipline. The Cambridge Diploma in Computer Science was the world's first computer science degree program that started at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory in 1953.
