Do you think the following statement/explanation of both energies are explained correctly? And do the student have a understanding of both terms? I have provided
Do you think the following statement/explanation of both energies are explained correctly? And do the student have a understanding of both terms?
I have provided my two words I have chosen to talk about this week below. Please enjoy my response to this weeks discussion.
Energy
- What familiarity and prior knowledge do you have about the term?
- My prior knowledge of the word energy is that it is a term used to describe something that can apply a force or to accomplish a task.
- What does the term mean in everyday language to everyday people? Use examples to help describe your thoughts. How do people use the word?
- Most people understand the term Energy is the electrical energy that is provided by a company.
- What does the term mean in technical language to physicists?
- In technical term in physics is "energy, in physics, the capacity for doing work"
- How is the term related to the course student learning outcome? Use work and energy to describe changes within a closed system.
- This term is used in physics to display and calculate the forces that are in a system. In a closed system energy is used to do work to accomplish a task.
- What are the similarities and differences between the everyday and technical meanings and uses of the term?
- Thesimilaritiesin the two definitions is that they both describe that they are both used to do work or accomplish a task. Such as heating orcooling in a house.
- What impact might the similarities and differences have on your learning of physics concepts in this course?
- The similarities have helped me to understand a real-world application and how the word relates to physics.
Gravitational Potential Energy
- What familiarity and prior knowledge do you have about the term?
- My familiarity of Gravitational potential energy is if you wrap a string around a pole and put a rock on it. Gravity will pull the rock down and provide energy.
- What does the term mean in everyday language to everyday people? Use examples to help describe your thoughts. How do people use the word?
- People understand this term as the energy that gravity can provide when an object is being pulled by gravity.
- What does the term mean in technical language to physicists?
- The technical language is "Gravitational potential energy is the energy possessed or acquired by an object due to a change in its position when it is present in a gravitational field."
- How is the term related to the course student learning outcome? Use work and energy to describe changes within a closed system.
- This term can be related to how an object falls and impacts another due to gravity. In a closed system, objects attract each due to their gravitational pull which does positive work in a closed system.
- What are the similarities and differences between the everyday and technical meanings and uses of the term?
- The similarities that the two meanings have is that they both reference how the attraction of two objects can be used to do work.
- What impact might the similarities and differences have on your learning of physics concepts in this course?
- Understanding the similarities of the two definitions helps to understand the concept of newton's second law of equal and opposite reactions. Objects attract each other but also push on each other as well when they are close enough.(wk5 Jon)
