Dr. Xu had volunteers look at a screen where combinations of letters appeared for a fraction of a second and subjects had to read the word out loud as quickly as possible. 120 total items were presented to subjects and there were three types of words in the list. One third of the words were food-related (e.g., meat, candy); one third were acquisition-related (e.g, want, obtain, hunt); and one third were neutral (e.g., book, street). The 120 words were presented to each subject in a randomized order. In addition, a random half of the subjects in the study were hungry (they were asked not to eat for at least 4 hours before coming to the study) and half had just eaten lunch. Subjects who were hungry were faster at reading out loud the food-related words and acquisition-related words than the non-hungry subjects, but there was no difference between hungry and non-hungry subjects in reading the neutral words.
