Draw a branched alkene that contains 5-10 carbons. Review what the term branched means. Count the carbons, since if you draw a structure with 3 carbons your answer will automatically be incorrect. Try to draw a unique structure. Each student should have a different alkene. Using this alkene, answer questions #1-4 below. Perform the following actions:
1) Give the IUPAC name for your alkene.
2) Write the molecular formula CxHY for your alkene (to write the molecular formula, click the arrow next to the Bold, italic, underline icons to find the subscript button, hit again to get out of that mode). If you can't find it don't worry right now.
3) Write the balanced combustion reaction for that alkene. There is an exercise in iCollege that explains how to balance combustion reactions.
4) Lastly, react that alkene with a) H2 with a Pt catalyst, and name the product that is formed, react the same alkene with
b) H2O, with an acid catalyst (H+), name the product ( nomenclature is learned in Chapter 13)
5. Draw 2-pentanol, dehydrate this alcohol and draw the major product formed by reacting this alcohol with an acid, in the presence of heat. (This reaction is explained in section 13.4 in the text). Name the alkene. [Hint: You can use the equal sign to draw in the double bond]
