The grating on the door prevents the microwaves from exiting the unit. The microwaves vibrate the food which causes the food to get hot. When the timer expires, the microwave prevents the magnetron from generating microwaves and the microwave beeps to let the person know the cooking is finished. When the person hears the beep, they remove the cooked food and can smell the odors from the cooked food all of which makes them feel satisfied. However, a defective magnetron prevents the microwave from producing the microwaves and the person's dinner is ruined as a result.$$Note: A microwave does not produce heat to cook the food.
