"Robin"
Traci, a substance use counselor, met with her new client"Robin" today. Traci completed an assessment with Robin in an outpatient substance use counseling center and learned the following about Robin: Robin is an 18-year-old Caucasian female who is a senior in high school. Robin was referred for a substance use assessment by her school counselor. Robin states her school counselor called Robin in to talk with her because she noticed Robin has been missing school much more often than she has in the four years she has been in high school and that Robin's grades have been dropping. The school counselor knows that Robin plans to go to college next year and she is concerned that Robin's current school performance will interfere with these plans. Robin tells Traci she does plan to go to college next year and that she wants to become an architect. Robin explains that she "was honest" with her school counselor and told her she has "been partying some this year, but it is no big deal". Robin's school counselor asked if Robin would be willing to speak with a substance use counselor for an assessment to determine if a problem exists. Robin agreed to the assessment but did not want her parents to accompany her.
Robin explains to Traci that during the summer before her senior year in high school, she met some people on her summer job, and she has been "hanging out with them". She states they "like to party" and she has been drinking alcohol with them over the last four months. Robin tells Traci that she never drankbefore, but states, "I wish I had because I like the way I feel when I drink". Robin says she "sees the world differently and feels more relaxed" when she drinks alcohol. Robin shares that "once or twice a month, I spend the weekend with my friends,and we drink the entire weekend".
Robin reports that her parents have been "yelling at me" about being away from home so much and that causes arguments between she and her parents. Robin acknowledges her grades in school have "dropped some" because she doesn't always "feel like" doing her homework after drinking, and that on several occasions, she has driven her car after she has been drinking.
