He did not get there before the whale took his leg in its mouth and dragged him to the bottom of the deep tank and back up again at an alarming speed. Duke could not swim well and soon drowned. Duke, not trained to deal with whales, could not control the situation. The next morning, the staff and trainers reported for work and found Duke floating face down in the pool.
