Dunbar & May, Ch 6, 7 Dalliba, James. A Narrative of the Battle of Brownstown. New York: David Longworth, 1816. http://www.archive.org/stream/narrativeofbattl00dall#page/n7/mode/2up In the thirty years between the end of the American War for Independence and the beginning of the War of 1812, Michigan underwent many transformations. Because it was now part of a frontier between British Canada and the new United States, the territory became a battleground when war broke out between the two countries. The big question on both sides was one of land and resources. Dunbar & May point out that the British wanted to remain in Michigan to protect the fur trade. The first American governor of Michigan, William Hull, engaged in land speculation while in office. Many other people came to Michigan territory in an attempt to make a quick buck by exploiting Michigan land and the resources it contained. The War of 1812 resolved the question of the American-Canadian border, but it left many of Michigan's residents--including Native Americans and the French who had intermarried with them for generations--with doubts about their title to the land they and their ancestors had occupied. Problems of land ownership and natural resources would continue to plague the territory for decades. Some of the most significant battles of the War of 1812 were fought in Michigan, and several of them were located in the Detroit area. Using the account in Dalliba and the sources in the reading from Dunbar & May, explain the significance of the battle of Brownstown. Why do you think Dalliba felt it necessary to write his Narrative? Support your answer with examples drawn from the readings.
