During custodial interrogation in the U.S., law enforcement is permitted to use lies and deceit to get a suspect to confess to the crime. This much-used practice does not violate the constitution and confessions that result are admissible as long as the suspect was mirandized (i.e. given his Miranda warning). According to the US Supreme Court lies and deceit are allowed because, for the most part, suspects do not confess to something they have not done.

In contrast, in England, where our criminal justice system originated, law enforcement CANNOT use lies and deceit to obtain a confession during custodial interrogation.
