The SHARP framework (Shaia: 2019) was originally developed to make sense of oppression in the context of inequality, disadvantage and poverty and to find ways to create shifts and respond to oppression. This framework has a strong intersectional lens to understand discrimination and ways oppression are formed and exercised in everyday life. It was originally created to look at disadvantage and poverty in America but it can also be used in the Australian context. There are many Community Service workers who are aware of the dynamics of discrimination and oppression however we tend to focus on addressing the outcomes of these issues (ie supporting family violence victims) and not always on the oppression itself ( ie addressing the cultural causes of family violence). In order to ensure social justice is a practice and not simply a value or principle we need to become more aware of how to make sense of oppression and what role we can play in addressing it. The Sharp framework has five levels; Figure 1: The SHARP framework Structural oppression W hat issues are impacting the person? Is there access to all the systems necessary for quality life? Historical context Analysis of Role Reciprocity and mutuality Power What historical issues impacted environment? What is the provider's role in the service relationship? What strengths and gifts can the person share with others? What is the person's role in changing the environment? How has this environmental history contributed to where the person is now? Will the provider maintain the status quo or disrupt it? How will those gifts and strengths be identified and used? How can the person use his or her power to impact policies and structures? This week we will be exploring the first two levels of the framework. Structural oppression and historical context.
