General Instructions

This assignment is approximately 1000 words in length. Grading of the paper will be based on scope, depth, critical thinking skills, and grammatical accuracy. Your paper should be written in the 3^rd person, so be sure to avoid any 1^st person subjective experiences. Pay careful attention to the "Submission Requirements" posted on page two of this assignment. They are mandatory elements and you are expected to follow them!

Topics

Choose one of the topics below for your paper.

1. E.B. White's Charlotte's Web and Karen Levine's Hana's Suitcase: A True Story are filled with memorable characters: round, flat, static, and dynamic. These characters play different roles for different purposes. Please choose one character from each of Charlotte's Web and Hana's Suitcase: A True Story that you find are important to their stories. Examine their development (if any), their purpose(s) in the text and their overall impact on the theme(s).

2. Children's literature can fall under a variety of sub-genres, including fiction, non-fiction, picture books, biography etc. Select either Charlotte's Web or Hana's Suitcase and consider what sub-genre the text falls under and why. Then, select another work of children's literature (not from the course reading list) that you are familiar with which falls under the same sub-genre. Discuss how each text (either Charlotte's Web or Hana's Suitcase and the text you have chosen) uses elements like character and theme to develop the sub-genre you believe they belong to. Remember this is an exploration of these concepts based on their definitions from the course content. Be careful not to misread the connotation of these words.

3. Child readers often learn from and identify with the characters in a story. They learn whom they want and do not want to be. Using examples from Charlotte's Web and Hana's Suitcase: A True Story and the concepts of "character" (which means, round, flat, dynamic, revelation etc.), compare and contrast how this applies.

4. Children's Literature sometimes portrays characters that face and deal with many conflicts or challenges that stem from nature and/or society, other individuals, and/or from within. Compare and contrast two characters, one from each of Hana's Suitcase: A True Story and Charlotte's Web, focusing on the various conflicts they face and how they overcome the obstacles and hardships in order to survive in the world(s) they live in.

5. Theme is something that comes alive as the characters act out the plot. Using the concept of "theme," what if any, themes do Hana's Suitcase: A True Story and Charlotte's Webhave in common? You must discuss expression of theme and contrasts while using examples and quotes from both sources. Review the proper narrative elements that contribute to theme for your answer.
