Each prompt below presents a scenario lifted from the Amazon case study materials. For each of the scenarios, specify how the choices or possibilities were or would be presented as an either/or question that would lead to a suboptimal decision for each of the stakeholders indicated below the prompt. The optimal decision is indicated in the unbiased framing provided. A. [6 points] As of 2017, there are 15 Amazon websites around the world. Of these websites, Amazon Prime has yet to be launched only in Australia, Brazil, India, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Singapore. Plans are also underway to add two more websites-Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. With past websites, the length of time to launch Amazon Prime varied from one to five years. Gopal Acharya, a second-generation Indian-American who began his career at the Amazon Fulfillment Center in 2000 and rose through the ranks to manage several of Amazon's new businesses, was handpicked by Jeff Bezos to head the Amazon Prime Global Division. One of the Division's main projects, Prime-in-Five, was to roll out Amazon Prime in the locations shown below within five years from the time the store opens [the year in brackets refers to the year the store opened]: Brazil [December 2012] The Netherlands [November 2014] India [June 2013] Singapore [July 2017] Mexico [August 2013] Australia [November 2017] Upon appointing Acharya, Jeff Bezos also renames the project Prime-in-Three, reflecting the new target that Amazon Prime be launched on every website within three years from the time the store opens. There were five employees working on the project when Acharya began his new role. Of these five, only one, an Australian who came to the US to study at Fairfield University, has lived overseas, namely the US. The rest have never lived abroad and none can speak any language other than English. After two months, Acharya felt that the team, having gotten themselves entangled in problems with foreign suppliers in Brazil, India, and Mexico, was not making as much progress as he would like. Unbiased framing: The Prime-in-Three employees can begin working on the Netherlands, Singapore, and Australia within the next 12 months given that Brazil, India, and Mexico are already behind the new three-year target and would therefore not even figure into future discussions and evaluations. There is little justification to replace everyone on the team given that the next three websites the team will be working on are in English-speaking countries. Either/or Framing 1. What either/or decision might be presented to Gopal Acharya? Answer: 2. What either/or decision might be presented to the Prime-in-Three employees
