Each study below states a statistic and a conclusion that has been drawn from the statistic. Please come up with at least one confounding variable that may be affecting the statistics that is unrelated to the conclusion that was drawn. Example: Elementary school students with bigger feet have better reading ability (this is a true statistic). Therefore, having big feet makes you smarter. Confounding Variable: Age. Elementary school students who are OLDER have bigger feet (because they are physically bigger), and elementary school students who are OLDER also have better reading abilities. The better reading ability and the foot size are both related to age. So age is a confounding variable in this study. 11. Eighty percent of all automobile accidents occur within 10 miles of the driver's house (this is a true statistic). Therefore, it is safer to take long car trips. 12. Arizona has the highest death rate for asthma in the United States (this is a true statistic). Therefore, it is unsafe to go to Arizona if you have asthma. (Hint: dry, hot weather is GOOD for asthma sufferers). 13. At West High School, half of the students are below average in mathematics (this is a true statistic). Therefore, the school should receive more federal aid to raise student math scores. (Hint: think about the what the word "average" means)
