Each week you will compose and post an entry in what you should view as a continuing Learning Journal for the course. In your weekly entry, focus on those assigned works that were not the focus of the week's Discussion Board post. That is, do not write on any of the works addressed in the Discussion Board assignment.  Offer your insights into and opinions about the ideas and perspectives of as many of the other assigned works as possible, analyzing whether they agree with own thoughts and values or not. Also comment on how these ideas might be applied to your life circumstances and the choices you may make on a day-to-day basis relative to issues of love and passion.

 

Below is what we learned about this week:

Compose and post a thread  in which you compare and contrast four of the five songs we studied this week (by Chris Isaak, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Margo Price, and Lizzo). Focus on their views of the pain caused by "common love"—in these instances, the infidelity (or potential infidelity) or the short-lived nature of romance founded on a primarily physical love.

Explain clearly where you agree or disagree with their viewpoints and/or ideas, and why. 

 

I agree with all of the points of view in the five songs we looked at this week: "Wicked Game" by Chris Isaak, "You Ain't Woman Enough" by Loretta Lynn, "Jolene" by Dolly Parton, "Since You Put Me Down" by Margo Price, and "Good As Hell" by Lizzo. All five songs talk about the pain that comes with loving someone else and the strength and persistence that are needed to get through it. 

   

Chris Isaak's song "Wicked Game" is a sad ballad about a man who has been hurt by a woman he loved when she betrayed him. The song shows how helpless you feel when you love someone who can't be counted on. It shows how painful it is to have someone you care about break your trust, and how painful it is to know that you can never trust that person again. In the song's lyrics, the man who sings it tells the woman he loves that he is desperate and has lost hope. He begs her to stay loyal to him and not let him down. The words of the song perfectly capture the strong feelings that were going on at the time, and they also serve as a reminder that simple love can cause terrible pain. 

  

"You Ain't Lady Enough," a song by Loretta Lynn, is about a woman whose husband is cheating on her with another woman. She will not give up, and she will do everything she can to get him back. The words of the song praise the bravery and determination of a woman who won't let a man who isn't faithful to her win her heart. Her song lyrics are full of a fierce drive and a refusal to let anyone betray her. She won't give up on her partner and says she will do everything she can to save their marriage and make it work. This song could be seen as an anthem for strength and perseverance in the face of love. 

 

Dolly Parton sings a different kind of song when she sings "Jolene." In the song's lyrics, a woman begs her rival, Jolene, to stay away from her and her partner so that she can save their relationship. Loretta Lynn is ready to fight for her relationship, but the woman in Dolly Parton's song begs Jolene to stay away and spare her lover. Loretta Lynn is ready to fight for the love she wants. In the song, the woman is begging the other woman to be kind to her because she wants to keep her relationship no matter what. The song is a reminder of how far people would go to keep a relationship going strong, and it hints at the desperation and pain that come with love between two people. 

 

"Since You Put Me Down" by Margo Price is about a woman who is moving on after a relationship that didn't work out. Margo Price wrote the lyrics for the song. She has decided to be successful on her own and has stopped looking to her ex-boyfriend for love and support. The words of the song praise a woman's strength and courage for being able to move on with her life and be successful on her own. It's a song about being independent and a reminder that even though shared love can be painful, you can get up, dust yourself off, and move on with your life. 

  

Finally, Lizzo's song "Good As Hell" is about how a woman can move on with her life after a failed relationship. She is done being hurt and wants to love herself and move on with her life. This song talks about how important it is to love yourself and how, even though romantic love can be hard at times, you can still come out of it stronger and more resilient than before. Even though love between two people can cause sadness, the song is a hopeful and inspiring reminder that it is possible to get better and love yourself again. 

  

Each of the five songs takes a different approach to the idea that shared love can cause pain. I agree with all of them because I think it's important to recognize not only the pain that comes from shared love, but also the fact that there is hope and that we can move on.
