Each year Adventure Zone Amusements, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, runs a major amusement park (Wander Wonder) in Southern Alberta. Adventure Zone Amusements has developed a growing customer base due to family-centered marketing, sensible cost-management (avoiding new, expensive, unproven rides) and innovative use of technology. Adventure Zone Amusements president Angela Kurusugawa and the board of directors are championing a refresh of the company that will cover everything from their branding and marketing to their facilities and technology.
Let me describe my vision, Angela said. For admissions, we will replace the traditional ticket by adopting a computer-based RFID smartband system to use as passes. RFID smartbands, with a small scannable tag that contains the passs ID number, will account for almost all sales. Each pass has a pass-type: from the pass-type we will know the initial credit balance. Each admission will then be a debit against the pass until it has no credit left. Our database will track passes and their associated admissions, but not tickets.
WanderWonder currently tracks 140 attractions, which we identify by an AdventureZone-generated ID number (only 100 attractions are active at any one time). For each attraction, we track its manufacturers name, descriptive name, gross weight (in kilograms), minimum height for a child to ride and quantity of credits needed for admission, as well as an attraction-type code, which will be one of: rida (adult ride), prea (premium adult ride), ridc (child ride), prec (premium child ride), dsen (display for entertainment), dsps (display for public service) and spcn (special concert). For each of these seven attraction-types, we track whether or not it is tax-deferred.
Passes are one of ten types, as shown in the table below. Initial balance can be credits or rides, depending on the type of pass...
Pass type code Pass type description Initial balance Suggested list price Days before expiry
smca small credit-pass: adult attractions 1510.000
lgca large credit-pass: adult attractions 5030.002
smcc small credit-pass: child attractions only 157.000
lgcc large credit-pass: child attractions only 5020.002
mdrc medium ride-pass: child rides only 3030.001
mddc medium ride-pass: displays and concerts only 5050.001
daa day-pass: adult attractions 999999965.000
dac day-pass: child attractions only 999999950.000
wka week-pass: adult attractions 9999999340.006
wkc week-pass: child attractions only 9999999240.006
Passes can be purchased in the park from any of the kiosks (20 in total) we track each kiosks AdventureZone-created ID number, its location on the park grid, the minimum number of staff for the kiosk, the amount of electricity watts needed by the kiosk for signage and also the watts needed for interior lighting. For each pass purchased, the kiosk # and selling employees ID # are recorded. Also, the customer can optionally fill out a form (rarely done except for more expensive passes) including their family name, given names, email address, snail mail address (which involves five fields: two separate address lines as well as municipality, province_state and postal_code) as well as the estimated number of monthly park visits. In response to that form, a customer ID number is also created. Our database currently tracks 3400 customers.
Whether or not the customer submits a form, they can use their pass for admission to attractions. The admitting employee will pass an electronic reader over their pass and can instantly tell if the pass has sufficient credit remaining and if the pass-type is denied from admission to the chosen type of attraction. Note: all types of passes allow admission to all types of attractions, except for those 35 or so combinations recorded as denials for example: in one denial, a small child-ride pass-type (smcc) is denied admission to regular adult rides (rida). Whenever a particular pass-type / attraction-type combination is to be denied, it is also given a denial ID number, a denial begin-date and possibly an end-date.
If the customers pass is not denied and has sufficient credit, then the database records the admission. That admission is included in calculating the total credits used for any future use of the pass. If a customer ever challenges the correctness of the computer records about his pass, one of the kiosks can print out a pass-report, something like the three admissions for pass 27311, below:
