l create an infographic comparing two countries along different macroeconomic measures. You'll get the information you need by combining what you've learned from our readings this semester and additional research you will need to conduct.

You can use Visme (visme.com) or another infographic creation software of your choice to create the infographic. Visme is relatively easy to use and has many useful features that are available with the 'free' account. If you use a different tool, make sure it will allow you to generate the final infographic in either jpg or pdf format.

To begin, choose the two countries you wish to analyze.

Your infographic should include the follow information:

  • The names of the two countries you have chosen to study
  • Identify whether each country has a pure market economy, a pure command economy, a mixed economy or a traditional economy. To answer this question, consider whodetermines how the four fundamental questions of economics will be answered in each country. The questions are: (1) What goods and services will be produced? (2) How will these goods and services be produced? (3) Who will get the goods and services? (4) How will the system accommodate change?
  • Data collection: collect 10 years of data for each of the following variables
  • Real GDP
  • Inflation
  • Unemployment
  • Create a figure (bar chart, time series line graph, etc.) graphing at least one variable over time for your two countries. (You will get minimal points if you take a figure from an online source rather than graphing the data yourself.)
  • Address the following areas:
    • Differentiate between the two economies: Identify what distinguishes or differentiates the two countries' economies. For example, one country's economy might depend on ownership of a valuable resource; one country might have a young labor force while the other has an aging labor force with many workers nearing retirement; one country might have a highly trained workforce while another has a larger but more unskilled labor force; one country might be undergoing political instability which drives away foreign investors.
    • Forecast the future: Are their economies, as measured by real GDP, expected to grow or shrink over the next two years? By how much?
    • Challenges: What are some of the biggest challenges each country faces over the next 2-3 years? How do these challenges affect your growth forecasts?
    • Trade: What are each country's major imports and exports? Are they a net exporter or importer? Who is their biggest trading partner?
    • Monetary policy: Who controls the monetary supply in the country i.e, who sets monetary policy?

You are welcome to add other interesting information to your infographic. Be sure to use a variety of ways to convey information in your infographic. Make it interesting, visually attractive, and easy to read/understand. There are numerous examples of infographics online. Use these for inspiration.

Some good sources for macroeconomic data are:

St. Louis Federal Reserve FRED Economic Data (US data primarily)

Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)

International Monetary Fund (IMF)

World Bank

Remember to properly cite all sources of information. You'll want a reference list at the end with APA7-style citations and will also need to use in-text citations within the body of your infographic as appropriate.

You will submit your completed infographic by placing the jpg image in a Word document, along with any necessary explanation or discussion of the infographic and submit this document (1) in the appropriate Assignments/Dropbox and (2) by posting the jpg file as an image in a discussion post in the "Comparing Countries" discussion board. (Using that discussion board you will then be asked to provide feedback on at least one of your peers' infographics.) 10% of your grade will be based on providing constructive feedback to at least one other student using the "Comparing Countries Infographic" discussion board. (You'll have access to the discussion as soon as you've posted your infographic to the discussion board.)
