Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf are noted for their Sapir-Whorf hypotheses which states that culture is reflected in the language and language determines a person's perception of reality. Cultural anthropologist Clifford Geertz argues that the focus of the study of cultures should be on the language of the culture for that will truly tell all that is needed to know about the culture. You've probably heard that food, clothing, music, and the like are what makes a culture but according to communication scholars it is the language. Anyone can eat or make the food of a culture. Anyone can make wear the clothes of the culture. Anyone can make or enjoy the music of a culture. But can anyone just start speaking the language of a culture? True cultural identity is based on whether a person can speak the language or not. If they can speak the language, then they are in the culture. If they cannot speak the language, then they are not in the culture. Click on the link to read about Cultural Identity. Your cultural identity is a culmination of all that happens in your upbringing and is reflected in the language dialect you speak. English is a language but there are several dialects of English: American Mid-West or Southern, British Cockney or Welsh, and Australian Kriol or Norfolk. Your language dialect determines what you can and cannot interpret, comprehend, and sense. Language is not natural and must be learned. If you do not learn language, you cannot communicate with others. The longer it takes for a person to learn a language, the longer it will take for them to learn anything. The language dialects you speak, determine which cultural groups you belong. In one-hundred words or less, answer the following. For this assignment, identify by name a cultural group that you belong, the language dialect spoken, three things that are talked about the most, and why these three things are talked about the most indicating that they are highly valued. Although a cultural group need not be linked to a specific location or region, more often than not they are, so thinking location of the culture may help you narrow down the language dialect.
