Elassar is an entrepreneur who wanted to get three commercial giants in Metro manila. He started a new business called El Mart, which used the internet and landline as well as cellphones to take orders for grocery products. He had four vans and eight warehouses located in different parts of Metro Manila. Orders were received by competent staff that filled orders with so much efficiency and speed. The three big supermarkets that he was challenging controlled 75 percent of the grocery business in the cities of Metro Manila.

Elassar was confident that his business can withstand and even surpass sales of the three big supermarkets. First, he offered selections of products that were presumed to be limited. He researched customer needs, sold products that they bought often and in big quantities such as canned goods, soft drinks and juices, bath and laundry soap in a variety of brands, baby diapers, toiletries and other necessary items that are often purchased households. His choices of products included those that he could offer for 35 percent lower than those offered by large stores and supermarkets.

His idea included selling computers so that customers can easily order from his enterprise using the internet. Of course there were detractors that said Elassar can not succeed. They thought most customers will buy their groceries in a store rather than online. Other competitors even said large supermarkets would cut their prices and force Elassar to quit and be bankrupt. However, Elassar thought that all customers like to save money and most people are busy and have jobs that home delivery is more convenient for them. Then Corona virus struck. More and more people were afraid to go out or were restricted by the government to go out of their homes. Even barangays were monitoring the movements of their residents. Thus, Elassar was not ridiculed anymore and his business became more successful that he was able to add more branches to his supermarket chain.

Questions: 1. Do you think it was a good idea for Elassar to start a new business that competes with very large companies that are well known and control most of the grocery market? Justify.
