Electromagnets Objective: The student will observe how magnetism can be used to make an electromagnet. Materials: 0 Nail or metal rod - Coll of insulated wire a Battery Procedure: 1. Take a length of insulated wire and loop it around a nail or metal rod. 2. Attach the wire leads of the loop of wire to a r'D Cell\" battery. 3. Test the system against some materials that you know are attracted to magnets. 4. Determine the direction of the magnetic flux lines using known magnets or a compass. 5.
