Ellie and Juan are worried that their infant son, Jeff, is deaf, because he rarely pays attention to them when they speak to him. They bring him to a physician for testing. To test Baby Jeff's hearing, the physician takes out a sharp needle and a bell. He rings the bell right behind Jeff, out of Jeff's sight, and then immediately pokes Jeff in the foot with the needle. Jeff cries in pain. After the parents have soothed Jeff, the physician does the same thing, ringing the bell, and then poking Jeff with the needle. The physician repeats the entire procedure ten times. Then, he rings the bell one more time. But this time he doesn't poke Jeff with the needle, and does nothing. Jeff screams as if he were in pain. "Congratulations," the physician tells Jeff's parents. "Your son is not deaf."
