Elliot & Niesta (2008) were curious to see what effect the color red had on men's perceptions of women. One sample of N1 = 43 male participants were shown a photograph of a woman with a red background. Another sample of N2 = 35 male participants were shown a photograph of the same woman with a white background. After a brief view (5 seconds) of the photo, each participant rated the photo on sexual attractiveness on a scale of 0 (not sexually attractive) to 9 (highly sexually attractive). The sample who saw the red background had M1 = 7.2 on sexual attractiveness. The sample who saw the white background had M2 = 5.9 on sexual attractiveness. Elliot & Nesta decided to re-conduct the two-tailed t test now with a more rigorous 0.01 significance level. They used the same values as before: t = +2.55 and d = 0.89
