A counter flow tray tower is to be designed to absorb SO2 from air stream by using water at 25C. The entering gas contains 15%molSO2 and leaving with 1%molSO2 at a total pressure of 101.3kPa. The gas flow rate is 50kg/hr.m2 (solute free basis), and the entering water flow rate is 100kg/hr2m2 (solute free basis). Assuming an overall efficiency of 70%, calculate the number of theoretical trays and actual trays needed to achieve the required separation. The tower operates at 25C and the water entering contains traces of SO2(0.01% mol). Based on your result above, do you recommend using tray tower or not? And why? Suggest another solvent to absorb SO2 then repeat the calculations and compare with the results you obtained for water as a solvent. NOTE: You cannot assume that the system is diluted, therefore; you must use mole ratios instead of mole fractions.
