The Problem

“StayHome Videos” is a large video hire store, whichis installing a computer system to support their members only,video hire scheme. The following is a description of the hireprocess.

StayHome has a large list of videos in stock which are allbar coded and they have an electronic cash till system equippedwith bar code readers to identify specific videos. Eachcustomer has a membership card, which is bar coded, so thatStayHome is able to identify specific customers and full details ofthe hire can be recorded. Each member may borrow an unlimitednumber of videos. The video number is created by the managerand uniquely identifies each video for hire. The store mayhave in stock multiple copies of some popular titles forhire. The video catalogue number uniquely identifies eachvideo and is used by the distributors in the provision ofvideos.

The shop stocks films that fall into the followingcategories: - comedy, drama, horror, musical, science fiction,children and adults only. When a video is in stock its statuswill reflect that it is not hired out and when the member returnsthe video its status will be amended accordingly. And the datereturned is changed from NULL to the day's date.
