Ever Given, a 224,000-ton container ship, was grounded on March 23, 2021,in the new passage of the Suez Canal after being blown off course by a dust storm.Eight tugboats were at work trying to dislodge the vessel.After nearly a week of relentless efforts, the Ever Given was freed on March 29, but it took nearly another week to clear the line of 422 vessels waiting to pass through the canal.The canal handles around 12% of seaborne trade, making it an essential point of passage. Each day of blockage disrupts more than $9 billion worth of goods.

On May 25, Egypt offered to cut its compensation claim down from 916 million U.S. dollars to 550 million dollars against the impounded vessel after the SCA obtained the estimated financial value of the goods on the ship.Linking the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, the Suez Canal lost between 12 to $15 million in daily revenues during the blockage, according to statistics of the canal authority.
