Example A: Lisa
Lisa, a recent TSTC graduate who earned a certificate and an Associate of Applied Science in
Welding Technology, has been working on a production team as a welder for eight months. This
is the first position she has had other than fast food and retail jobs and occasional babysitting.
Lisa is the only female on her team and is one of only a handful of female welders employed by
her company. Although she is a competent entrylevel welder, it is clear that there are others of
all genders with more welding experience and more enhanced skills on the team who can weld
better than she can. However, Lisa has been devoting spare time outside of work to developing
her welding abilities, and every day she comes to work with a positive attitude.
Lisas team leader has noticed her growth. She typically arrives early for her shift and maintains
her PPE. When she completes her work she cleans up and puts all of her equipment in the
designated spots. If one of her team members falls behind or has difficulties with a task, she
offers to help out. When issues arise or decisions are made that Lisa does not agree with, she
expresses herself respectfully, but ultimately defers to the majority or the leaders decisions.
Recently the organization agreed to a project that would examine installing and programming
robots to do the more tedious welds. Lisas team leader recommended her to assist with the
design and implementation of the project. This would enable her to learn new programming
skills, collaborate with personnel from various teams in the company, and to be eligible for a
permanent position on the welding operations team at higher pay than her current position.
