Example Scenario- Uniform officers received a 9-1-1 call about a male and female arguing at #214 Main Street in Hamilton. This is a residential neighbourhood. The neighbor next door advised he could hear what sounded like an assault and a female yelling for help. Uniform officers and EMS arrived onscene and located a female unconscious in the closet near the front door. She had a large gash on her face and was transported to hospital. The suspect was gone and the residence was cleared. Police have now returned with a search warrant to search for and seize evidence.

Priorities

  • BOLO (Be on the lookout for) the suspect
  • Physical and clothing description for suspect - checking area
  • Consider arrest warrant if thought he may leave your jurisdiction

Investigative Steps

  • CPIC - background of both suspect and victim
  • Interview victim at hospital
  • Interview Dr. and nurses at hospital
  • Document and photograph victim's injuries
  • Interview witness- neighbor next door
  • Canvas neighbourhood for any other witnesses
  • Process scene - document and photograph blood evidence - blood spatter analysis
  • Search for and secure any evidence of the assault - weapon?
  • Seize boots of the suspect when/if arrested

The mothers memory is poor so she keeps writing him cheques for $4000.

3. You work as a security officer (peace officer status) at the

TTC. You receive a radio call to attend the Sheppard-Yonge St. subway regarding a suspicious abandoned briefcase left on the subway platform It is a Friday afternoon at 3 pm. There are about 150 people waiting for the next subway in the area. A citizen reports a male walked away from this briefcase and left the area a few minutes ago.

4. You work for corrections as a Correction Officer. You receive information that there has been a collapse of an inmate in the prison's library. The reason for the collapse is not known at this time. This is a maximum security pen.
