The variable you are measuring is their score on this exam. a) Give your best guess: what do you think will be the mean of this variable? Your answer will be in points) MY ANSWER: I think a reasonable guess for the mean on a statistics exam might be 75 points. There's no right answer, but to me, that seems like a reasonable guess b) Give your best guess: what do you think will be the standard deviation of this variable? (Your answer will be in points) MY ANSWER: I think a reasonable guess for the standard deviation on a statistics exam might be something in the range of 5 points to 10 points. I'll just say 10 points. How did I come up with a guess of 10 points for the standard deviation? Here's my thought process: First remember that a person's deviation is their distance from the mean. What do I think would be the smallest deviation on a statistics exam? Well, I'll guess maybe 0 points. Because there could easily be someone in the class who scored exactly the mean (75 points), and in that case, they would be 0 points away from the mean..in other words, they would have a deviation of 0. What do I think would be the biggest deviation on a statistics exam? In other words, what's the furthest that anyone scored from that mean of 75? Well, I could imagine that the lowest score might be about 20 points lower than the mean - a score of 55. And I could imagine that the highest score might be about 20 points higher than the mean - a score of 95. So, I'll say that the biggest deviation could be 20 points. Recall that the standard deviation is just another way of saying the average or mean deviation. If I guessed that the smallest deviation was 0, and the largest deviation was 20, I'll guestimate that the standard deviation is halfway between those - so, 10 points.
