EXCEL OM ONLY
IS 614A Excel OM Assignment for Quality and Statistical Process Control
PART I. Verify and confirm with Excel OM, your hand-calculation solutions for problems 1,2, and 4 shown below (save each one as a separate tab in your Excel OM Portfolio).
- You are the Quality Manager for a very large Jeep Dealership in upstate New York town of Utica. A shipment of 50 new vehicles has arrived and you inspect them for defects with the following results:
Defect Number
Scuff marks 160
Scratches 30
Minor Dents 10
The scuff marks and scratches can be buffed out while the dents can usually be fixed without affecting the vehicles' appearance.
- What type of Statistical Process Control is represented by this problem?
- Determine the Upper and Lower Control Limits for the sample
- Draw the Control Chart for this situation
- How many defects would a vehicle need to have in order for it to be rejected?
- How and Where do you think these defects happened?
- You have been hired by Northwell Healths' Northern Westchester Hospital Center to work in it Quality Assurance Department. This week you are going to participate in the Quarterly Quality Outcomes Review for the Departments of 1) General Surgery and 2) Cosmetic Surgery. To prepare for your presentations and discussions at each Department's meeting, you select and examine for errors and mistakes 50 surgical records for each of the 10 surgeons in each Department with the following results:
- General Surgery Department
Surgeon # Number of Errors and Mistakes Fraction Defective
1 2 0.04
2 1 0.02
3 3 0.06
4 1 0.02
5 0 0.00
6 5 0.10
7 2 0.04
8 3 0.06
9 2 0.04
10 2 0.04
- Cosmetic Surgery Department
Surgeon # Number of Errors and Mistakes Fraction Defective
1 1 0.02
2 1 0.02
3 3 0.06
4 4 0.08
5 2 0.04
6 0 0.00
7 0 0.00
8 2 0.04
9 1 0.02
10 1 0.02
- What type of Statistical Process Control is represented by these problems?
- Determine the Upper and Lower Control Limits for these situations.
- Draw the Control Chart for these situations and plot the data.
- Are any of the surgeons out of control based on the data?
- Are there extenuating circumstances? Consider what each type of surgeon does and why there might be a difference in quality outcomes for the two surgeon types.
- What advice would you give to each Department Head?
- You have been hired by the KraftHeinz Corporation in the Quality Control Department for the Maxwell House Coffee Division's Jacksonville, Florida Plant. At this time, you are checking on the quality of a new product "ICY Rich French RoastR," where ICY stands for "Increase Cup Yield Coffee," where 14 ounces of this product makes as many cups of coffee as 15 ounces of the traditional Rich French RoastR product therefore it is imperative to control the weight of coffee per can at 14 ounces. Every two hours for an entire shift, you randomly select, collect and weigh 5 cans from the packaging line before cans go into shipping cases. The following are your results:
Shift Hour Can Weights
2 14.0, 13.7, 14.1, 13.9, 14.2
4 13.8, 14.2, 13.9, 14.1, 14.1
6 13.7, 13.9, 14.0, 14.0, 14.1
8 13.8, 13.9, 13.9, 14.1, 14.2
Because this product and its process is new, we do not know the process standard deviation hence, we need to calculate the Control Limits based on "average range" information.
- What type of Statistical Process Control is represented by this problem?
- Draw the two Control Charts for this situation
- Is the process in control? Explain your answer.
PART II. For Problem #3, since there isn't a Pareto Chart feature in Excel OM, please design your own Pareto Chart using Excel OM.
- You are the Quality Manager for the TastePoint Company, a subsidiary of IFF, (formerly David Michael & Company), a flavor and food ingredients firm. Next week, you are to present to the firm's President and Staff the analysis of defects affecting the quality of the firm's Vanillin product (synthetic vanilla). You have noted the following data for the defects found in the last 1,000 batches of the Vanillin product:
Defect Number of Occurrences of this defect
Mislabeled Precursor 15
Insufficient Catalyst 3
Insufficient Solvent 6
Leaking finished product package 16
Finished Product Package Safety Vent missing 20
Mislabeled Finished Product 60
Wrong Package Used 30
- Use a Pareto Analysis for your presentation and discussion
- Draw the Pareto Chart (graph) for this situation
- Which defects should be addressed first in order to significantly improve quality?
