Except for rare exceptions, what is the best way to add text to a rectangle in PowerPoint?

Insert a Text Box on top of your rectangle and type your text inside the Text Box.

Use the Outline View to add your text, and then link that text to your rectangle.

Type your text directly inside the rectangle.

Right$-$click the shape and use the $$Text to Display$$ field to add your text.
