A$.$ Apply the substitution test for phrasal categories discussed in lecture to identify the constituents in $(1).$

Your goal is to identify all of the $N{P}^{\text{'}}s,V{P}^{\text{'}}s,P{P}^{\text{'}}s,$ and AuxP's in $(1).$

You also have to justify each choice with a sentence explicitly showing the substitution.

B$.$ Indicate the constituent phrases in $(1)$ with labelled brackets.

Exercise $2$

Now consider the sentence in $(2).$

$(2)$ The crazy giraffe behind that tree will chase the hungry lion

A$.$ Provide a set of lexical insertion rules necessary to generate the sentence in $(2).$ To do this, you will have to

determine the syntactic category of each word$-$no justification necessary.

Recall that a lexical insertion rule has the form $xY.$ The left side of the rule $(x)$ represents a syntactic

category while the right side $(Y)$ specifies the list of words that are members of category $x.$
