Experiential learning project: Salon Sara Lina
Hi Class,
There are 2 phases to your experiential learning project:
- Phase 1 - written report due by March 22nd (submitted online through Canvas)
- Phase 2 In-class presentation (last 2 weeks of semester)
Written report
The written report is the deliverable to the client, Salon Sara Lina. The report should contain an introduction stating what issues were analyzed regarding the salon. After the introduction you will write about each issue identified, in detail. Quantitative analysis should be a part of this section, through use of tables, graphs, statistical models; in other words, there should be a data analytics/visualization component present in the report. These can be included in an appendices section at the end of your report or in the body of the report. Any recommendations regarding operational aspects of the business will be made in the written report.
Besides thorough analysis of the pertinent operational issues, the written report will be graded for the following:
- Professional tone
- Presentation/layout (is the reader able to easily follow your point, data, tables etc based on your formatting)
- Spelling/grammar suitable for a professional document
- Ability to clearly state issues and recommendations (as well as why/how you came to your conclusion)
- Visually appealing (black & white Times New Roman or use of colour/design element)
There is no minimum or maximum as far as page numbers. I do not want to limit your analysis and use of quantitative data to support your position. That being said, it is up to each group to edit their document, to ensure only relevant points are made. The more irrelevant issues are identified and included in your report, the more your mark will decrease.
The written report should be double-spaced, and printed on one-side only.
In-class presentation
The in-class presentation aspect is to see your presentation skills. The presentations purpose is to serve as an effective, concise, yet informative summary of your written report. It is up to you to decide how you want to use your time. The presentation should be between 5-10 minutes in length. Once your written report has been submitted I will inform you what topic(s) to cover in your presentation.
The presentation will be evaluated on the following:
- Professional presentation (clothing, setting)
- Verbal (proper grammar, formal language, professional tone, minimal use of filler words "like", "umm" etc.)
- Ability to present information concisely and clearly
The service learning project is worth 15% of your overall mark. The written report makes up two-thirds of that 15% (10%), and the presentation makes up the rest.
Before the written report is due I will set up a time to meet with each group for a brief overview of their report and topics they have identified. This is a good time for you to figure out what is pertinent to the report and what is not.
Good luck with the project. Sara is relying on your findings, so please keep that in mind as you assess her business. This is to be treated as if you are real consultants analyzing the salon. Your findings could be implemented into her operations, and, hopefully, lead to improvements financially!
