Give practical examples from the case study to support your answer.In Kwa-Nxamalala township, there are various community projects funded by the South African government through the Departments of Social Development, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Economic Development. One of such project is Kopanang community garden located in the industrial zone where most development initiatives are found in the township. Because of its location, all agricultural produce from the project are sold in the local markets such as schools, agro-processing industries, supermarkets in the shopping centre, taxi rank, street hawkers and so forth. Kopanang community project has created employment and business opportunities, improved food security, and reduced poverty in the local communities. In addition, project beneficiaries and their households are no longer going to bed hungry because the garden produces surplus food for home consumption and income generation. In the project, they rotationally cultivate cabbage, spinach, soya beans, pumpkins, onions, sweet potatoes, carrots, maize and tomatoes. In addition, the project is rearing broilers (chickens) which are sold in the local market and informal settlements within the project vicinity. Because of the diversity of agricultural produce in the project, the beneficiaries have access to sufficient nutritious food required by the body to be fully productive, healthy and active. To improve vegetable production, project members use chicken faeces, chemical fertilizers for soil fertility; and herbicides and pesticides to control weeds and pests, respectively. In addition, the project was expanded next to the river when the demand for vegetables and crop produce increased significantly within two years after the project was initiated. The project is now located closer to the dam, which is a source of water for the community. As a result, some of the community members have complained that since the project's expansion, chemicals from the project contaminate water in the dam, poison the soil and emit carbon dioxide that negatively affect the quality of the atmosphere.
