Chapter 2 - Riddle Me This The first stage of the writing process requires you to define the rhetorical situation (ie. identify your document's subject, purpose, audience, and context of use). Usually beginning technical writers provide too much information for the rhetorical situation of their document. This confuses (and wastes the time of) the reader much as the riddles of this assignment do. You live on a barren looking street in the downtown area, so you write to the city's Clean and Beautiful director, suggesting that they line the sidewalks with Bradford flowering pear trees. Your street is 90 yards long and 8 yards wide. If they were to plant a tree every 6 yards on both sides, for symmetry, how many total trees would there be on the entire street? . . Your business has a bag filled with 35 pens to distribute to customers. In the bag, there are 10 black pens, 8 blue pens, 2 red pens, and 15 green pens. They have company name and logo printed on them. If a customer were to randomly pick a pen from the bag one at a time without looking, what is the most number of draws until he or she would have two pens of the same color? And here's the easy one... As I was going to St. Ives, I met a man with seven wives. Every wife had seven sacks, every sack had seven cats, every cat had seven kits. How many were going to St. Ives? So - answer each riddle in your post and, MORE IMPORTANTLY, tell me what information was unnecessary or causes confusion! Consider what your audience NEEDS to know so that they would be more likely able to answer the questions correctly (without actually giving them the answer). You might want to rewrite the question in its concise (less confusing) form. Assignment Purpose: Knowing how much information your audience needs is one aspect of being a good technical communicator. Can you determine what is the right amount of information? Instructor's Notes . Although you can find these answers on the Internet - the answers aren't what I'm grading! Explain how you would reword (what information you'd remove from) these riddles to make them easier to understand and answer. . You do not need to reply to your peers' responses; however, after posting your answer, look for a post from me with the answers/explanations. Quare banny with them before you click "Post Reply"
