Explaining the Trends in Inflation Numbers In the last two years everybody's focus has been on inflation and its consequences. Your team, which is interning at a Brisbane based financial planning firm, has been tasked with writing a research report on the trajectory of some of the key indicators of inflation. The report which covers the period 2017-2022 should aim to provide some insight on more than just the headline inflation numbers. Also, since US debt and equity securities are increasingly a part of their client portfolios, you are told to overweight your analysis on US numbers. You do not have to define inflation or describe how the underlying prices are collected or forecast inflation; the report is meant as a quick overview of key economic information for the firm's clients who range from novice investors to the reasonably experienced. The research report should focus on the key measures of inflation used by policy makers (i.e., core inflation) in arriving at their decisions. In addition, it should discuss - The influence of goods and services on the overall numbers over the period of interest - The role of energy prices on inflation - The role rent has in driving inflation - It should speak to the relationship between rent and the unemployment rate, a key measure of the health of the economy. - Last it should contrast the Australian numbers against the US numbers Your report 1. Where appropriate, should use figures/charts to make your case. 2. Use publicly available official data in both countries. URLs for the websites used to source data should be included in the references. 3. It should explain (in brief) how the measures used in your report were estimated.
