Exploration 1. Review the video of the train struck by lightning (this example was also discussed in the lecture). There are two observers - one on the platform and a passenger on the train. Assume that the relative speed of the two observers is c. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wteiuxyqtoM a.) Draw a spacetime diagram from the reference frame of the platform observer showing the sequence of events in the video, in which the events are simultaneous for the platform observer. Label the relevant world lines and events for this scenario. Explain (below) why the diagram shows that the train's passenger does not see the events simultaneously.

b.)

Draw a new spacetime diagram but still in the reference frame of the platform as in Question 1. However, make adjustments as necessary to show how the lightning strike events can be simultaneous for the passenger. Then, connect the appropriate events on the spacetime diagram to generate a line of simultaneity for the passenger. Briefly explain your modifications and reasoning in the space below. In this problem, the worldline of the platform observer and his observations are optional.

c.)Redraw the spacetime diagram for Question 2 in the frame of the passenger on the train. Assume again that the strikes are simultaneous for the passenger (who is in the middle of the train), and further assume that the passenger passes the platform observer at the moment the strikes occur in the reference frame of the train. Show the worldlines of the train, the passenger, and the platform observer. Can you construct a line of simultaneity for the platform observer that intersects both lightning strikes? If so, draw it. If not, draw separate lines of simultaneity for the platform observer through each of the lightning strikes. Explain why your result implies that simultaneous events in the rest frame of the passenger are not simultaneous in the rest frame of the platform observer. You should have discovered from the previous question that the rear strike occurs first for the platform observer. How does your diagram indicate this?
