Exploring charge properties with sticky tape. Part 1: You may have noticed that invisible tape, such as Scotch brand Magic Tape, frequently sticks to your hand (by static electricity, and not by the stickiness of the tape) when you pull a strip of tape off of a roll. We will use this feature to explore a number of properties of electrostatics. To start with, we need to be able to prepare a charged tape in the same, repeatable way. Here is the technique (which you will repeat often): Pull off a strip of tape about 12 inches long. Fold over about - inch at each end to make "handles." This makes it easier to pick up the tape when necessary. Carefully stick the tape to the table, smoothing it out as you press it down. This is your "base tape." Pull off another strip of tape, but this time, make it about an inch shorter than the original piece. Again make handles on the two ends. Carefully stick the second strip of tape directly on top of the base tape. Try to make it nice and smooth, and rub a finger over the entire length of the tape at the end of this procedure. Mark one or both handles with an "A", as this will become a type-A piece tape. Quickly (or fairly quickly), pull the top tape off from the base tape. If you do this too efficiently, the tape will likely curl up and/or stick to your hand. This isn't what you want. If that happens, try to save the piece of tape, and then repeat the process of smoothing it down on the base tape. Try the removal procedure again. You want to be able to pull the type-A tape off of the base tape quickly enough to charge it, but you also want to end up with a tape that has not made contact with a person (except at its handle). NOTE: You may repeat the charging process many times with the same piece of tape, and you may reuse the same base tape throughout the lab
