FACTS Sarah Sampson is a senior at Newsome Public High School. On October 14, 2008, Sampson went to school wearing a T-shirt that read, "Wilson 2008," showing her support for gubernatorial candidate Blake Wilson. After a teacher noticed the shirt, the principal called Sampson to his office and told her that her T-shirt violated the school's dress code. The school's dress code prohibits students from wear- ing T-shirts that contain logos or slogans that are controversial or disruptive. When Sampson asked for clarification, she was told that students could only wear T-shirts with sports or college logos. All other logos and slogans are banned by the dress code. After Sampson refused to go home and change, the principal suspended her for five days. Sampson believes that the school has violated her First Amend- ment right to freedom of speech.
