Fair dealing are object of great discussion. Several important cases were handed down by the Supreme Court of Canada. The SOCAN v. Bell case dealt with the fact that Bell and iTunes allowed potential customers to listen a preview before actual purchase and download (30 to 90 seconds before deciding to buy). SOCAN applied to the Copyrights Board to collect the royalties for those previews, and the Copyright Board refused it, considering the previews an example of "Fair dealing", which is an exception and limitation to the rights granted to the author of creative work by copyright, under section 29 of the Copyright Act.
