Fernanda was a smart young businesswoman, and she prepared a written agreement for Herbert to sign before starting the landscape project on the property to show Herbert how serious Fernanda was about her business. The agreement contained the details about the work to be done and the payment- $600 in cash at the end of the week. Herbert signed the agreement.

Fernanda completed all the work required under the agreement. Herbert reviewed the work done by Fernanda on his property, and agreed that Fernanda had done everything she needed to do to finish the job, but Herbert still refused to pay Fernanda. Herbert said, "I am not going to pay you to teach you a valuable lesson about business; I don't legally have to pay you because you are just 16 years old, and also because we are family".

Fernanda did not think Herbert was correct. Fernanda believed she should still be paid the $600, but she did not know much about business law.
