Furthermore, The European Union (E.U.) port system is generally characterized by larger ports but smaller volumes than in the United States. Across the Atlantic, U.S. ports handled 50% more freight, with 95 tons of goods for each country resident compared to the E.U.'s 40 per capita. This is a problem as many of the roads and bridges are not fit to carry freight transport, and as a consequence, only a handful of major European cities have the infrastructure to deal with them. In much the same way as the transport infrastructure of the United States has developed, with the majority of long-distance and freight-orientated journeys utilizing the existing railway networks, Europe needs to strengthen the infrastructure of its roads. With the new large-scale lorries, only the major roads will be able to handle them, and so they need to be modernized; some bridges do not even meet the average strain of everyday use, never mind being able to deal with tonnes of extra weight, modernizing these bridges and building new ones could be crucial as these lorries adapt and grow in size.
