locations, and one specific location has twentyeight employees who work in the production
department, and two employees in the accounting department, the manager, Mr White and
the accounting assistant, Miss Jones. Miss Jones deals with all items relating to the financial
recordkeeping of the business, while Mr White deals with the managerial aspects of the
department and provides oversight to Miss Jones. Among Miss Joness many duties, she
prepares all the paperwork for new hires, collects the punch cards from the employees at the end
of each pay period and completes and signs the paycheques.
When a new employee is hired, Mr White, the accounting manager sends the individual to Miss
Jones to complete the appropriate paperwork for payroll. Miss Jones is responsible for properly
completing the paperwork regarding the employees SIN, gross pay, and other details.
Miss Jones sometimes must track down employees to get their timecards so she can pay them.
Employees manually fill out the timecards and sometimes take them home in their uniforms.
The accounting manager does not review the paycheques that Miss Jones writes. He is often too
busy dealing with the managerial accounting issues related to production to have time to do
much of the paperwork that Miss Jones presents to him. Since Miss Jones is allowed to sign
cheques, she prepares the cheques and hands them out to the employees.
Miss Jones prepares the paycheques manually and is currently using the payroll tables to
calculate income tax, CPP and EI deductions. The year has just started, and Miss Jones is
unaware that the rates for income tax, CPP and EI change each year. She is still using the
payroll tables for paycheques.
