(Begin with what is the community's "broadly agreed set of common" public goals; then what are its "mechanisms of intercommunication," etc.) Would you say the community is a "discourse community"? If youre not sure, what else would you need to know about your discipline to be able to decide? Second, what connections do you see between Swaless list of practices and that feeling we sometimes get of belonging (or not belonging) to a group? How have you gained a sense of belonging in the past? What do you think defines belonging in your discipline/field of study, and what would it take to make you feel like you belonged in your discipline?
