Five of the six people who defrauded Turtle Island Resort in the Yaskawa's of $840,000 were today handed prison sentences of up to six years by the Lautoka High Court.
High Court Judge Justice Paul Madigan sentenced Anand Prasad, Reenal Chandra, Rajneil Chandra, Deo Narayan Singh and Shirley Chand from two to six years in prison while Atishma Singh was handed a two year sentence suspended for two years.
The court heard that in May 2006, Anand Prasad who was employed as an accountant forged 84 cheques amounting to $840,000 and on 46 of those cheques he wrote his own name as payee and on others he wrote the names of his family members and friends.
Justice Madigan said Turtle Island is a luxury island resort catering to the wealthy tourists in the center of the Yasawa Group and the tourists on arrival are welcomed to the Paradise however events on the island were a road to hell for the six accused.
Justice Madigan also said that the incident took place over a period of 21 months which was a planned fraud.
