Florida slowly started dismantling the parole system in the late 1970s to 1980s.In 1983, sentencing guidelines were enacted, thereby effectively abolishing parole for those offenders who were sentenced for crimes committed on or after October 1, 1983. By 1995, sentences were solely based on the determinate sentencing model and no individual sentenced for any crime after October 1, 1995 was parole eligible. At this time there are still a few thousand individuals sitting in a Florida prison who were sentenced prior to 1995 who are potentially eligible for parole.
