Following consensual sexual intercourse, women in many Western societies have the legally protected right to reject becoming a parent by opting to abort the fetus. At the same time, following consensual sexual intercourse, men in these same countries often do not have the legally protected right to reject becoming a parent. If a man impregnates a woman and she elects to carry the baby to term, the man is generally held to be legally and economically responsible for the child.
