Footnotes: 1) These are, by no means, the only metric prefixes. There are a ton of others - however, nobody really much uses them in chemistry unless they study some unusual things. Personally, of the prefixes I've left off, the only ones I've seen in chemistry are "femto (f)" and "pico (p)", and the only ones I've seen anywhere else are "giga (G)", "tera (T)", and "exa (E)". Though your teacher may require that you know that a "decaliter" is ten liters, I doubt it'll come up much. 2) The u symbol shown is the Greek letter mu. I can only guess that with mega being (M) and milli being (m). they needed something else that started with an "m" for micro. 3) You may be used to seeing sentences like "there are 100 centimeters in a meter" rather than "there is a hundredth of a meter in a centimeter. If you do the math, you can see that these terms are equivalent to one another. 4) A "micrometer" is usually referred to as a "micron." This is, as far as I know, for historical reasons. Scientists all over the world use the same system of units so they can communicate information clearly. This system of measurement is called the International System of Units (SI). Metric measurement is based on the number ten and makes calculations with the system relatively easy. Kilo- Hecto- Deca- deci- centi- milli- The blank line in the middle of the conversion chart can change depending on what we are measuring: The unit for length is the meter (m)...for mass is the gram (g)...for volume is the liter (L)...for speed is (m/s). PART A What type of measurement is indicated by each of the following units? Choices are in the last column. density 1. g/ml 4. g 7. m/s length 2. s 5. cm3 8. L mass time 3. km 6. mm 9. km/h volume speedExample: If there are 3 dwings in every 2 takas, convert 12 takas into dwings. 12 takas x_3 dwings = 18 dwings 2 takas Practice the following conversions using the fraction method: Starting Show your fraction work.... Desired measurement measurement 2.7 m mm 3.2 km m 270 m km hours 23 min mg 29 g h 45 s mm 2 km Challenge: Convert 5 m/s into km/h. Hint: set-up your equation with two fractions
