SCENARIO: This is a third-party workplace safety audit for a large company that utilizes landfill facilities to dispose of waste. The waste is generated from facilities located in a geographical region of the US.

These landfills are not owned by the company and are operated by private or government entities.

The audits are being conducted to ensure the landfill operators follow safety, health, and required environmental regulations to not expose the larger company to undue liability. As a general rule, waste operators at landfills do not employ many people on site. The bulk of the waste is delivered to the site by contractors and even private parties. However, the jobs performed at the landfill are critical to ensure that safety and health measures are implemented as required by others who utilize the landfill.

As the landfill accepts multiple types of waste, we opt to review

Submit a document to include the following information.

List each hazard and include the full citation, i.e., 1910.156(e)(1)(ii).

Include a brief description of the hazard and the recommended remedy to correct the hazard.

Finally, identify any specific health and safety training or certification required for the workplace hazard depicted. For example, if the photo illustrates a high noise area, then identify the need for a hearing conservation program as required by 1910.95(c). Keep in mind that any time a hazard is identified, some training needs to be provided. This may be informal training such as a toolbox talk or pulling an employee or supervisor aside and explaining the hazard and the remedy. However, training must be addressed.
