For each of the following examples, calculate the standard error of the estimate and determine whether or not you can be confident in the predictions.
1) Dr. Sanburg wants to know if an authoritarian parenting style is related to behavior problems in children. She has a research team observe the parents of children and rate their parenting style on a scale from 1 (not at all authoritarian) to 7 (extremely authoritarian). She then has teachers record the average number of daily behavior problems for each child (the number of behavior problems ranged from 0 to 10). The correlation between authoritarianism and behavior problems was r = .36. The standard deviation of the behavior problems was 4.
2) Zandura proposed a relationship between anxiety and likelihood of addiction. He had clients take an anxiety test (higher number means more anxiety). He then had clients take a resistance- to-addiction assessment (higher number means more able to resist addiction on a scale of 1 to 7). He found a correlation of r = -.7; and the standard deviation on the resistance-to-addiction scale was 1.6.
